Please remember that Matrix Key Systems can be adapted into almost ANY type of lock, however, this Products page only depicts our core range of cylinders & locks; please contact us if you require more information.

Terminology
To help achieve consistency and understanding, we've included this concise lock terminology section. Please take a moment to read through it before proceeding.

Barrel - The part of the lock that rotates with the key. A barrel is 12-14mm in diameter with a specifically shaped keyway usually referred to as the 'broach' (named after the engineering term describing the actual machining procedure of cutting the keyway into the barrel - 'broaching'). A barrel is also known as a 'plug'.

Shell - this is the housing for the barrel and they come in many different shapes and sizes according to the lock they are designed for.

Cylinder - A complete assembled barrel and shell. Other components in a cylinder include pins (tumblers), springs, cams, screws, tails, clips, etc. There are many shapes and sizes of cylinders, and no they are not necessarily 'cylindrical'.

Lock - a general term for any complete locking device that contains a cylinder.

Lock Body - a term usually describing a lock without its cylinders.

Deadlock - is any lock that can be locked on both sides of the door therefore requiring a key to get in or out. A deadlocked door can stop an intruder from entering by simply smashing a piece of glass and reaching in, or if they climb in through a window they'll have to take your TV back out through the window. You should never deadlock a door whilst you're inside and there are now various locks on the market that reduce the chance of this happening accidently.

Deadlatch - you remember "the old credit card trick" to open a lock - wedge it between the door and the jamb to push back the latch - well 'deadlatch' is purely a term to describe any lock that has overcome this issue. A deadlatch is not necessarily a deadlock, the Lockwood 002 Series for example is a deadlatch but not a deadlock, and so are our range of knobsets & leversets. And by the same token, a deadlock is not necessarily a deadlatch.

Deadbolt - a deadbolt requires a key to lock it from the outside, ie, you can't just pull the door shut behind you. A deadbolt is not necessarily a deadlock as there are many single cylinder deadbolts with a simple turnsnib on the inside.

Springlatch - also known as Nightlatch or Streamlatch - This is the opposite of deadlatch and yes they are vulnerable to "the old credit card trick", especially on open-out doors.

Mortise Lock - this refers to any type of lock body that is mounted into a 'mortise'. 'Mortise' is a general carpentry term but for our purposes here it describes a pocket cut out of the door (from the edge) that houses the lock body.

Rim Lock - this refers to any type of lock that is 'rim' (surface) mounted onto the door. It's a term usually reserved for distinguishing from mortise locks.

Backset - is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the cylinder, which is usually either 60mm, 70mm or 127mm

Latch - is the part of the lock that actually protrudes from the door into the door frame/jamb thereby providing the physical means for securing the door. In the case of a deadbolt, this is usually referred to as the 'bolt'.

Strike - is the device on the door frame/jamb that the latch (or bolt) locks into.

Shackle - this refers to the part of a padlock that actually opens and closes. The advertised measurement of a shackle refers to the vertical clearance when locked, ie, from the top of the padlock body to the underside of "U"

Replacement cylinders for existing locks

201 cylinder (as pictured below - $47.85)

Our solid body 201 cylinder - $47.85

The 201 cylinder design has been around for a hundred years. Its beginnings were as the external cylinder for nightlatches and now also for many rim-mounted deadlatches, deadbolts and deadlocks. In its installed state it can be easily identified by its round 32mm diameter cylinder face with a concentrically off-set barrel which is 14mm in diameter. There will also be a mounting ring/plate around the outside of the 32mm cylinder that varies in size and shape.

Important note - all our 201 cylinders have a solid brass body and face that prevents "fork" attacks. Other 201 cylinders have a heavily extruded lightweight cylinder body with a thin face-cap clipped over the front to give it the appearance of being solid; this makes them vulnerable to "forking", which involves punching a fork-shaped tool through the thin face-cap and then simply twisting the cylinder until the lock opens.

590 Cylinder (as pictured below - $47.85ea)

$47.85ea

The 590 cylinder can be easily identified by its oval shape (and is often referred to as an 'oval cylinder'), 18mm wide / 31mm tall with a 14mm round barrel at one end of the oval - usually the bottom, and often has a brand name stamped above it. Depending on the situation there could be a variety of handles, plates and covers around the cylinder. The 590 cylinder is extremely versatile due to an interchangeable 'cam' drive on the back of the cylinder that can be adapted to engage to various mechanisms from mortise locks to electronic keyswitches and high-security bolts, to cupboard locks and even some padlocks. It can always be recognised by the oval measurements above - with one exception - if you can see an 'Astra' brand somewhere on the lock then the cylinder is NOT a 590 cylinder although from the outside it appears exactly the same.

530 Cylinder (as pictured below - $47.85ea)

$47.85ea

The 530 cylinder is harder to recognise because the only visible part when it's installed is the 14mm diameter barrel (keyway), the rest of the cylinder body is contained within the lock.
Suits - Lockwood 530 / 930 / 950 range of knobsets and leversets, which are usually recognisable from a 'Lockwood' brand on the latch.

PD cylinder (as pictured below - $52.50ea)

$52.50ea

this cylinder design is used by many deadbolt, leverset and knobset manufacturers, including our own standard range. When installed into the lock, the only visible part is the barrel (keyway), the rest of the cylinder assembly (the brass part pictured) is concealed inside the lock. It's easily distinguished from a 530 cylinder by its 16mm barrel diameter (as opposed to the 530's 14mm diameter)
