About Us

Matrix Key Systems was born with one goal in mind - to bridge the two worlds of mechanical and electronic locking systems.

The biggest difference between them (besides price) was the process required to disable a lost or stolen key from operation, and that difference was huge! Mechanical was time-consuming, required trained labour, it was expensive, and offered no 'warranty' or 'insurance' against another stolen key next week. Electronic on the other hand, was quick, simple and cheap, and for many organisations this one advantage outweighed all the disadvantages of going electronic.

In the beginning we actually focused on combining a mechanical key with an electronic head, but we became faced with all the same issues that plague the electronic locking market today; like power failure, cabling, technology superseding, limited applications, cost, and the only additional benefit was a gimmicky 'feature' called Audit Trail which in 'real-world' scenarios is absolutely useless (despite what the manufacturers try to tell you), just ask anyone that has it.

Then we turned our focus to developing a 100% mechanical product that incorporated the 3 most important features;

  • Disable missing keys - this was by far the biggest advantage electronic had over mechanical.
  • Standard design - it had to be compatible with existing locks and cylinders already in the marketplace.
  • Bump-proof - lock-bumping is causing chaos in the Americas and has the same potential here.

After a few trips to the 'drawing board' the result was a remarkable product that continues to astound the public and industry alike, it not only addresses the original criteria, it also

  • sells at the same price-point as traditional restricted keys and locks
  • has 650% more coding capacity than traditional restricted keys and locks

As you can see from the table, nothing even compares to a Matrix Key System

* Almost any electronically controlled door will have a mechanical override cylinder incase of electronic or power failure. As standard, keys for these cylinders are readily available and cannot be controlled, nor are these cylinders usually bump-proof. You should also be aware that the mechanical override cylinder will usually bypass all the features and functions of the electronics.

Matrix Key Systems is now based in Tenterfield in northern NSW and is fundamentally an administrative, final assembly and distribution operation for our keying systems. We outsource all our raw manufacturing and sub-assembly because there's no point re-inventing the wheel and it remains more cost-effective & accountable. We continue to outsource our installation and service work for good reason - it's not exactly rocket science, plus it allows us to control overheads and deliver better value to our clients.

This business structure allows Matrix Key Systems to focus entirely on our clients and their locking systems; from new system design, to an extra key, to software support; when you call Matrix you're in the right place and talking to the right people.
