'Lock-Bumping' is a covert lock-opening technique that is causing mayhem overseas, especially in the US, and it has the same potential here in Australia. It requires very little knowledge, training or skills, and the only tool required is a key that slides into your lock, ie - any key that has been cut on the same key-blank, this is then filed down, inserted into your lock, given a tap or a 'bump' on the head and your lock is open. Want to see it in action? Even 4yo kids are doing it! Just google lock bumping.
Don't be fooled into believing that 'restricted' locks are immune from bumping because people can't obtain your key-blanks. They don't need a key-blank, they only need a key, any key, that has been cut on your key-blank, which means, at the very least, all your key-holders carry a potential 'bump key' for your premises, and what about your locksmith's other customers, and all their key-holders too.
Lock-bumping is not a new technique but thanks to the dark-side of the internet and unethical TV programs (including our own Today Tonight and A Current Affair) it has recently migrated from a well kept trade-secret to widespread public knowledge and a 'critical mass' has been reached where it is now unethical to not inform the public about lock bumping.
Although lock bumping is not officially causing major concern in Australia, it is happening and there's no way to tell how widespread it is, even forensic testing fails to identify a bumped lock, which is proving to be an 'insurance nightmare' in the case of a 'break & entry' without the 'break'.
One thing is for sure, crime always increases with economic downturns as people with nothing else to lose look for an easier way, which could well be the necessary ingredient in the bumping epidemic recipe for Australians.
